History of Academy

In 1876, according to the ordinance of Alexander II, the money donated by baron Stieglitz (1814-1884), a banker and industrialist, was used for the foundation of the Central College of Technical. Drawing to train drawing artists and ornament designers for manufacture workshops as well as teachers of drawing.

After the revolution in 1917 the baron Stieglitz Central College of Technical Drawing was reorganized into Petrograd State Workshops of Art and Design, which in 1922, joined the Academy of Arts, and in 1934 was transformed into the College of Architectural Embellishment of Buildings under the city's Executive Council.

In February 1945, the School was reestablished in its original by the decision of the Government as a multipurpose educational institution, training specialists in monumental, decorative, applied, and industrial arts. In 1948 the College became a higher educational establishment Leningrad College of Art and Design. In 1953 the College was named after V.I.Mukhina, People's Artist of the USSR. In 1994 the Mukhina College was renamed into St.Petersburg State Academy of Art and Design.
